Mathematics for Numeracy Teaching City & Guilds Level 3 Award

  • L3

This course is designed for people that teach Functional Skills and GCSE Maths within further education. It is ideal for teachers who have Level 2/GCSE Maths themselves, but want to improve skills to Level 3. It is a bridging qualification to the Level 5 subject specialism certificate. This is a part-time attendance based course that is recognised by the Department for Education and Skills and incorporates the 2014 Education and Training (ETF) teacher teaching standards.

The course allows you to develop your Maths Subject Specialism. You should be aware that all teachers of Maths are required to gain a full initial teaching qualification (CertEd/PGCE) in addition. The qualification has been developed in response to sector demand for a specific qualification for Functional Skills teachers to be developed.

The course is specifically designed for teachers of Functional Skills and the qualification is in place to allow SfL specialists to be able to bridge the gap between the Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications and the current Level 5 subject specialist awards. Any teacher of SfL who is looking to be awarded ATLS/QTLS must ultimately hold a Level 5 subject specialism.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for those teachers of Maths who want a subject specific qualification. You are required to at least hold Level 2/GCSE Maths and there must be confidence that your numeracy skills are at a standard in order to be able to progress to the study of these skills at Level 3. The qualification is appropriate for people above the age of 19. There is no requirement to be observed doing any practical teaching.

Course content

The course is a part-time attendance based programme and sessions will take place once a week.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Using mathematics: academic subjects
  • Using mathematics: professional and vocational contexts
  • Using mathematics: public and personal life.

The course is ideal if you wish to progress to subject specific numeracy teacher education programmes. This qualification allows you to learn, develop and practise your personal skills in Maths required for entry to specialist teaching qualifications. The qualification was developed to cover the criteria for entry to mathematics (numeracy) teacher training in the lifelong learning sector.

Assessment methods

4 x 2 hour unit tests at the end of each module.
