Practical Horticulture RHS Level 1 Award

This part-time Level 1 course is designed by the Royal Horticultural Society to meet the needs of anyone who wants to learn the essential principles of practical gardening. This qualification is designed at an introductory level, and has been developed to focus on the education and training of people who want get more involved in horticulture.

Entry requirements

There are no formal qualifications required but you will be required to undertake a range of practical tasks in order to pass the assessed part of the course.

Course content

The RHS has been awarding qualifications for over 100 years and its qualifications are held in high regard within the horticultural industry, making this course ideal if you are looking to increase your horticulture skills and knowledge, whilst also improving employment prospects.

During this course you will cover a range of topics, including:

  • Assessing and preparing soil for sowing and planting
  • Assisting with the propagation of plants from seed
  • Assisting with the vegetative propagation of plants
  • Assisting with planting and establishing plants
  • Identification of a range of common garden plants, weeds, pests and diseases.

Assessment methods

The course will be assessed through internal practical, written and oral assessments as set by the RHS.

Further study and career options

Upon completion of this course you could progress onto the RHS Practical Horticulture Level 2 Certificate, or onto other qualifications in Horticulture.

Additional information

You will need to bring suitable clothing for working outdoors and steel-toe-capped boots.
