Cutting Men's Hair City & Guilds Level 2 Award
Your cutting skills are among the most important you will need as a barber, and take time to develop. During this course you will use scissors and clippers to produce both classical styles and commercial fashion looks. As your skills develop you will gain the confidence to cut different hair types, creating both graduated and one-length cuts.
This is a student-focused course that will be tailored to meet the individual needs of each student, ensuring that your creative skills and knowledge will be expanded to maximum effect.
Entry requirements
3 GCSEs at grades A*- D or 9-3 ideally including English and maths. Other requirements: Desirable: If you have gained any work-based qualifications these could also be taken into consideration.
Course content
You will be taught how to provide different cutting techniques including uniform layer, graduation, around the ear outline, with fade. You will study the following units:
- Cutting Men’s Hair
- Health and Safety
Assessment methods
Following your practical training you will complete formative and summative assessments where you will have the opportunity to gain a pass, merit or distinction. Please be aware that you may need to provide models for your assessments. You will be taught theory knowledge including Health & Safety in the Salon which will involve online exams at the end of the units. You will also be required to study at home during the course to improve your practical skills, as well as produce written assignments and complete exam revision.
Further study and career options
Course progression: To expand or advance your skills you could continue your studies in women’s hairdressing or in barbering.
Career progression: Following the completion of the course you could work in a salon cutting men’s hair or as a mobile stylist.
Additional information
You will be required to purchase a kit costing approximately £60. There will be an additional cost of £45 for the Award in Health & Safety if you have not completed it already. Dress code is smart black trousers, plain black top (no logo) and closed in, low heel, black shoes. You will also need to buy a ring binder folder for theory notes and your portfolio of evidence.
