Horse Knowledge, Care & Riding: An Introduction (BHS Stage 1)

This evening course will provide you with training in both riding and stable management, and will also help you prepare for the British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 1 exam. There is a practical approach and there is plenty of opportunity to acquire and develop skills. There will be opportunities for you to ride and handle a range of horses under the direction of our fully-qualified, experienced staff. All of our Horse Management courses are based at Shuttleworth College, which is a BHS-accredited Where to Train and Examination Centre.

British Horse Society

Entry requirements

This course is aimed at adult students who can already walk, trot and canter competently. There will be a pre-course riding assessment. Please note the Riding Centre has a 13 stone weight limit.

Course content

The course will cover the content of the British Horse Society Stage 1 syllabus.

The topics you can study include:

  • Grooming
  • Horse clothing
  • Saddlery
  • Horse husbandry
  • Shoeing
  • Anatomy
  • Health and behaviour
  • Grassland care
  • Watering and feeding
  • Riding on the flat.

Further study and career options

Guidance will be given on how to apply for the Stage One exam, for which the student will need to pay an additional fee direct to the British Horse Society. Upon completion of the course you may wish to apply for further part-time courses, such as the Stage 2 Introduction to Horse Knowledge, Care & Riding.

Additional information

Suitable equipment is required, including: a current-standard riding hat, gloves, riding boots, jodhpurs.
