Special Educational Needs and Disability Studies (SEND) Foundation Degree (FdA) Level 5 (part-time) (subject to approval)

The SEND Foundation Degree is designed to give an understanding of the complexity of early education, child development, and the developing child in the context of their family and society in local and global contexts, with a particular emphasis on using the workplace setting to provide contextual background and focus. The course focuses on a holistic approach to learning and understanding the complex needs of SEND children.

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 48 UCAS points with 32 points from one A-Level qualification OR
  • 48 UCAS points from Early Years BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma OR
  • Childcare CACHE Level 3 Diploma OR
  • Early Years Care & Education NVQ Level 3 OR
  • Equivalent Level 3 qualification OR
  • Relevant work experience with young people under 18 years old, or families, children and babies

You will also need to undertake a paid or voluntary placement in a relevant setting for the duration of the course, two days (14 hours) a week. You will be responsible for arranging your own placement and this is an essential part of any offer made. We welcome applications from mature students who will be considered individually on experience rather than qualifications.

Course content

After an underpinning first year introducing key knowledge and skills, you will have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in the workplace in order to aid professional development. You will understand the importance of educational research and enquiry and carry out research in an educational context, which will prepare you for working in multi-disciplinary teams in Special Educational Needs and Disability and for further study.

Year 1

  • Introduction to Higher Education Studies
  • Developing Learning
  • Inclusive Practice

Year 2

  • Developing English and Mathematics (WBL)
  • The Learning Environment
  • SEND: School, Family, Community and Context

Year 3

  • Strategies and Interventions in Learning (WBL)
  • Reflections on Practice

Assessment methods

All units are assessed by a variety of methods including written assignments, presentations, short timed examinations and reflective logs. You will develop the skills of reflective practice and the writing of a reflective journal, and commitment to personal and professional development is a requirement of this Foundation Degree.

Further study and career options

On successful completion of this course there will be the opportunity to progress on to the BA Applied Special Educational Needs and Disability Studies course with the University of Bedfordshire. All successful Foundation Degree students have the right of direct entry to the BA at the end of their study.

You could then choose to follow a Primary PGCE / Schools Direct programme to gain Qualified Teacher Status, or the Early Years Teacher Status (GSCE grades A*-C in Maths, English and Science or equivalent will be required).

In addition, you could apply for the Specialist SENCO Award within Education Studies. 

If you do not wish to progress on to the top-up degree there are various options in employment within SEND.

Additional information

As part of the course you will be required to take part in a two day work placement (volunteer or employed). You will also be entitled to access the extracurricular activities offered by the University of Bedfordshire as per the part-time provision.
