Essex emu

Shuttleworth College has added a new member to its animal kingdom - a female emu.

Beaky, something of a big bird a 7ft with her chin up, had outgrown her previous home in Essex and is now finding romance with male emu shorter Shane in Old Warden Park.

Shuttleworth College animal welfare centre manager Carl Groombridge said: “Emus are flocking birds so prefer company. And as Beaky was hand reared in captivity she will be amenable to our students who are learning under our supervision how to care for animals.”

Shuttleworth College in Old Warden Park is now part of Bedford College. There are 1,000 students at Shuttleworth involved in a range of land-based learning full and part time courses. The animal welfare area is popular with those who hope to work as or with vets or facilities such as conservation parks and projects.
